India is one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world, and airlines are adding new aircraft every year. That creates careers on the ground and in the air. Here is what you can study after Class 12, based on your stream.
After 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
- Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME): train to inspect, maintain and certify aircraft, towards a DGCA licence under CAR-66.
- B.Tech Aeronautical Engineering: a four-year degree in the design, manufacture and testing of aircraft.
- Dual programme: AME + B.Tech: an engineering degree and AME training together.
- Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL): ground school and 200 flying hours towards a DGCA commercial pilot licence.
At Redwings in Bhopal, admission to all four programmes is through one test, AMERAT 2027.
After an engineering diploma
An AICTE-approved 3-year engineering diploma in any stream meets the eligibility for AME, along with medical fitness and no colour blindness. Diploma holders often adapt quickly to workshop training because they already know tools and technical drawings. Check yours with our eligibility tool.
After 12th in other streams
Technical aviation courses such as AME, aeronautical engineering and pilot training need Physics and Mathematics. If you studied commerce, arts or biology, aviation still has non-technical roles, such as cabin crew, airport ground services, customer service and aviation management. These are not offered through AMERAT; choose a recognised institute and check its approvals carefully.
Quick comparison of technical aviation courses
| Course | You get | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| AME | Training towards a DGCA maintenance licence | Hands-on technical work on aircraft |
| B.Tech Aeronautical | A 4-year engineering degree | Design, manufacturing and research |
| Dual programme | A degree and AME training together | Students who want both options |
| CPL | Training towards a DGCA commercial pilot licence | Flying as a career |
